The readings for this Third Sunday in Ordinary Time still challenge today’s readers/hearers.   First of all, we have to check our knowledge of historical places and connect them with the turmoil still going on in places in today’s world.   We also have to question ourselves about who Jesus is to us and who we are currently following as our Leader.

The first two readings confirm that 2026 does not have a monopoly over darkness or confusion in history.   Distress and gloom can be defined in many ways and felt very uniquely.   We all seek and turn to “light” physically and spiritually!    Let us remember that it is because of the Cross of Christ that we are Christians and believe in Jesus.   Let us pray that we will not be swayed by anything or any person that seems more comforting and less challenging!

Then there is Jesus in today’s Gospel reading who certainly, as fully human, felt the darkness surrounding the arrest of John the Baptist.   Jesus fills that darkness with light, however, by moving (literally and figuratively) into action. He preaches the Good News and calls others to do the same.

Again, that sounds easy to follow, but it is not!  We are still called, however, to repent.   That means to change our lives to be more aligned with God’s Plan.   The Kingdom of God is indeed at hand, right around us, in the people around us, not just those in Heaven.

I recently clicked inadvertently on an interview where the speaker was talking about the thousands of times in the New and Old Testament where people are reminded to serve the less fortunate in some way (as opposed to the zero number earmarking other points he was making.) In trying to practice what I myself preach, I am not trying to get on this person’s bandwagon.   I want to point out that a reliable way to get more on board with following God's Plan and what Jesus did himself is to help the less fortunate, whoever and wherever they may be.

Who will that be in your life?

Blessings,
